Blood and Ash Series

Howdy Y'all! Welcome back! This week on The Nerdy Girls Guide to Good reads, I'll be reviewing the Blood and Ash series. I started out only wanting to read the first book but the series is so good I wasn't able to put them down until I read them all. That should tell you a little bit about how this review is gonna go.  I have been looking for a book series similar to ACOTAR. For those who don't know what that is, it's A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. If you haven't read it.. go get it right now! I read that series over the summer and did the same thing where I read the whole thing in a week. While it is spicy, the story line is amazing and will keep you enthralled.  This series was the same why in that it kept my attention, had spicy scenes and had an amazing story line. There were times that I struggled with learning about the history, background and the land. Thankfully, they include a map in the front of the book as a reference and in the War of ...

The Inheritance Games By Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Welcome Back! This week I will be reviewing The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I had heard that this book was similar to one of my favorite movies, "Knives Out". This first time I watch the movie, I watched it over so that I could see all the details that I had missed previously. I make it a habit to watch the movie at least once every season. I always dreamed of having a house like the one in Knives Out, with secret passageways and little personal touches.   This book was very similar to the story line of "Knives Out'. Avery Grambs is a very intelligent 17 year old who is shocked to learn that she is set to inherit a fortune of one of the riches men in the world, Tobias Hawthorne. The catch? She has to live in the family mansion for a year that also holds the other members of the Hawthorn family. Specifically, Tobias Hawthorns 4 Grandsons, Nash, Grayson, Jameson, and Alexander.  Doesn't sound that bad right? Until we learn of a potential murder that...

Everything, Everything By Nicola Yoon

Let me start by saying that as a nurse, this book pissed me off. While the story is captivating, there are times where the story fall flat and had some big gaps.  This is the story of Madeline Whittaker. A teenager who lives with a condition called SCID, which is severe combined immunodeficiency. It's basically where you are allergic to everything in the outside world. So, Madeline lives in a hermetically sealed house and has not been outside since she was diagnosed when she was a baby. Her younger brother and father died in a car accident around the same time she was diagnosed. The only people that she can see are her nurse, her mother, and one of her teachers that comes to visit. Now, this tipped me off right away, because when people are truly immunocompromised, they can't be around people, or they can but they have to wear a mask or a special hood. Second, is that her mother is a physician... So your telling me that your gonna spend 12-15 hours a day in a hospital, with a b...

The Ninth House- by Leigh Bardugo

Let me start this post with telling you how much I loved Shadow and Bones which is another great book by Leigh Bardugo. I remember seeing somewhere online that they were going to make this Netflix series about a fantasy book. Usally when they do that I have to run out and by the book before I see the series. Harry Potter, The Witcher, Lord of the Rings, all the same. Had to read the book before I saw it. I go out and get the book and it was one of those books that you just can't put down. Loved it. I heard Six of Crows is the same way. Haven't gotten that one yet but I will.  So, when I found out that Leigh Bardugo had written another series that everyone was raving about and there was a soon to be sequel, you know I'm there. It's a little different than Shadow and Bone in that the settings are completely different. This one is set in this day and age where Shadow and Bone was more of a medieval times feel to it. It's about the occult practices of "the Ancient...

The Seven Husbands or Evelyn Hugo

Welcome back with another edition of- The Nerdy Girls Guide to Good Reads. This last year I caved in and downloaded TikTok. While I was scrolling and discovered BookTok and learned more about all the most recent highly rated books. I stumbled upon a recommendation for A Court of Thrones and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. I decided to go and get the book to see what everyone was talking about. I immediately fell in love with the book and ran back to the store to get the rest of the series.  After finishing the series in about a month, I began looking for other recommendations for books. I then decided to read, Verity, by Colleen Hoover. I am not one for thrillers, but I was unable to put this book down as well. I have now become obsessed with book recommendations from Booktok. The good the bad and the ugly! Don't care! I'll read it. Especially now that I'm not in school for the first time in 20 years. This year, I decided that I was going to read as many book recommendations as I c...

It Starts with Us

Hello! Welcome to my first blog post. I'm excited you are here! Please make sure you subscribe so you can follow along with the latest content and join my Nerdy Girls Book Club. I figured it was fitting to use "It Starts With Us" as my first review since this is the start of my blog post. If you have not read "It Ends With Us", I would strongly recommend going back and reading that first. However, maybe you are one of those people who are like, "No! I don't want to follow the rules! I do what I want!" Cool Cool, totally get it. More power to you. You just might be a little confused about some of the context in the second book.   The first book was extremely meaningful to me as I grew up with a mother who was abused by my father, and left and as someone who has been in situations that are similar. I will say that abuse comes in may forms and is not just physical but is also emotional and psychological. As the child of a survivor and...
